Slowing down the features of skin ageing

mature manHow does skin ageing occur?

The sun has a huge impact on skin ageing with UV rays causing damage to the skin over a sustained period of time.

UV rays produce very harmful “free radicals” which alters the skin’s cells and fibres. Cigarette smoke, alcohol and pollution are also factors in the ageing process of the skin and in women, the onset of menopause also speeds up the ageing process.

Dermatologists recommend using a variety of sun protection to prevent premature aging caused by the sun. This should include:

  •  Avoiding sunbathing, including use of indoor tanning devices.
  • Staying out of the sun between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., when the sun’s rays are the strongest.
  • Wearing protective clothing, such as a wide-brimmed hat and long sleeves, when outdoors during the day.
  • Applying sunscreen all year round. Sunscreen should be broad spectrum (offers UVA and UVB protection) and have a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or higher.

How to slow down the features of ageing

In addition to the above there are also a variety of skin treatments that can help slow down the features of ageing. This can include:

  • The use of cosmetic creams that include anti-aging properties. Daily moisturising of the skin is essential. Depending on skin type and age, the use of creams that contain antioxidant active ingredients which often contain fruit acids or retinol to help the skin boost collagen production.
  • Fillers and injections for lines and wrinkles – Dermal fillers are popular cosmetic treatments for wrinkles, facial lines (especially around the eyes, nose and mouth), lip enhancements, sunken cheeks, scarring and other depressions.
  • Use of laser treatments – Excellent results can now be achieved through the use of laser treatments which can assist to improve skin texture, pigmentation, redness and many more skin ageing features.
