As we age our skin undergoes many changes. These changes are usually most visible on our faces. The skin becomes thinner resulting in the development of wrinkles, skin loses its tone and sags and blood vessels become more visible. If there has been significant sun exposure, brown discoloration also appears and our pores appear more open and obvious.
There are many ways to improve the appearance of aging skin or to rejuvenate the skin:
Appropriate creams may help by reducing the effects of the sun by reducing damage to collagen and reducing pigmentation.
Lasers can enhance new collagen formation, reduce the appearance of blood vessels and get rid of the pigmentation associated with aging skin. Lasers are a major player in the rejuvenation of ageing skin.
Chemical peels and microneedling may also produce similar effects to lasers but neither of these are able to improve the appearance of blood vessels on the face. Only specific lasers can achieve this.
Dermal Fillers and Botox are able to improve both fine and deep lines associated with normal ageing of the skin. Some fillers placed at the appropriate depth in the skin have the ability to temporarily improve the texture of the skin.
Skin tone is more challenging to improve. Only limited tightening is achieved with the treatments described. There are devices (infrared and radiofrequency systems) which slightly tone and tighten the skin but the results are not always as obvious as patients expect. Significant loss of skin tone may need surgical intervention to achieve acceptable results.
